Our Curriculum

At Discovery Academy, our curriculum is designed with one clear purpose: to meet the diverse and individual needs of every learner, enabling them to feel safe, succeed and be fully prepared for life beyond school.

As a specialist setting,  we recognise that learning is not a “one-size-fits-all” experience. Many of our pupils join us with disrupted educational journeys or significant gaps in learning. Our curriculum responds to this by offering a carefully adapted, personalised and flexible approach that supports each learner to re-engage, rebuild confidence and achieve their very best outcomes.

A Personalised and Adaptive Approach

Our curriculum is shaped around the individual profile of each pupil. Through ongoing assessment, we identify starting points, strengths and barriers to learning, allowing us to tailor provision so that every child can access learning at the right level of challenge.

We use a hybrid model of delivery that blends:

  • Structured, subject-based learning
  • Therapeutic and relational approaches
  • Targeted intervention programmes
  • Practical and experiential learning opportunities

This ensures that our pupils not only develop academically, but also socially, emotionally and practically.

Building Strong Foundations

For many learners, strengthening core skills is essential. where required, our curriculum includes dedicated programmes in:

  • Phonics and early reading, to support communication and confidence in literacy
  • Literacy, developing reading, writing and oracy skills across all subjects
  • Numeracy, building key mathematical understanding and real-life application

These programmes are carefully adapted to suit individual needs, allowing pupils to revisit, consolidate and progress at a pace that is right for them.

Broad, Balanced and Meaningful Learning

Alongside core learning, pupils access a wide and engaging curriculum that reflects both primary nurturing approaches and secondary subject specialism. This includes:

  • A range of academic subjects
  • Creative and practical learning experiences
  • Opportunities for off-site visits and enrichment
  • Access to specialist teaching, facilities and therapeutic support

Small class sizes and strong relationships enable staff to respond flexibly, ensuring pupils remain engaged and supported throughout their learning journey.

Preparing for Life

Our ultimate aim is to equip every learner with the skills, knowledge and confidence they need for adulthood. This includes:

  • Developing independence and resilience
  • Supporting communication and social understanding
  • Building readiness for further education, employment or training

Through our personalised and adaptive curriculum, we support pupils to close gaps, rediscover a love of learning and move forward with confidence.
